Island to Island is a British Council funded international digital cultural exchange across the UK and Philippines, that connects young writers to explore the effects of climate action and resilience through prose and poetry. Young Identity and Mt.Cloud Book Shop each brought together 6 poets to collaborate in dissecting the ideas of both countries being Islands, encouraging them to observe the beauty and differences of their hometowns.
The Cost of Colonisation
Manchester, a place I now call home was once built on the backs of my ancestors. The textile industry that grew England's wealth, once starved my great grandparents.
The white man's greed for Indigo bled the fertile soil of my land dry.
Today I pay good money to feed the lineage of hands that destroyed an ecosystem;
A place we grew rice and wheat to feed our community. Now it remained arid and empty.
The rain falls onto exposed seeds, hoping for a miracle that never came.
The cobblestones that I love to skip over, stumbling around the city, drunk and uninhibited
Stole the lives of a people simply trying to build a family. Each brick is made of tears of the farmers, ashes of their burnt bodies and dreams.
Stepped over as a means to an end.
